"They will likely be having you dig out the irrigation ditches," she 'warns' him. "The Mother River's flooding keeps the soil fertile, but the mud clogs up the irrigation ditches too."

She'll use the bread to thicken up the bean and vegetable mixture, make it more readily scooped up.

"Is it?" Kreyu asks, surprised. "Everyone knows everyone else, there, and survival depends on everyone working together. Even in the cities, like Amikaya or the capital we visited on this island, the temples and other public places offer food and shelter to any in need, if they have not been taken care of already by those in the neighborhoods they frequent."

She starts placing the dough on a heated, oiled, stone. "Life is precious, precarious. When even a king must expect to see half of his children die from disease or accident before they are grown, to lose a wife in childbirth....."
