As much as it pains him to do so, he has to put up a 'wall' to avoid being pulled too forcefully by the sadness and the other feelings of misery and despair; if he allowed himself to 'feel' all of it, it might wear on him too quickly.
(Though he knows as soon as they land upon the ship he will likely drop the wall, but he can at least try for now...)
